Registration deadline: 02 Mar 2016
Starting date: 03 Mar 2016
Ending date: 04 Mar 2016
Overview
This two-day workshop will explore both the mechanical nuts and bolts as well as the strategy for adapting your indirect cost recovery to a changing funding environment.
The Mechanics
In the first day, learn how to recover full costs, especially overhead, when managing a diverse portfolio of funders, some that cap overhead and others that don't. This one-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of overhead, methods for full cost recovery, funder-by-funder review, and a hands-on practice for applying the methods.
Participants will walk away with a working knowledge of the 10 methods for overhead cost recovery and practice applying them in various donor situations.
Day objectives
- Learn overhead allocation theory
- Practice alternative approaches to structuring overhead accounts and allocation methods.
- Evaluate structure and methods based on your organizations current funding mix.
- Understand the different ways funders think about and regulate overhead payments.
- Learn budget best practices for various donors each with different approaches to overhead.
The Strategy
In the second day, take a high level exploration of the tradeoffs of going with funders who have overhead caps such as when to change approach, whether to say "no", what the landscape look like going forward, and how to use InsideNGO survey data.
Participants will walk away with a clear view of the funder landscape, the choices for adapting to it, and a decision-making model for testing whether systems change is worth it.
Day objectives
- Learn the overhead restrictions of various funders
- Understand the implications of donor mix on full cost recovery
- Work through a decision-making model for your own organization
- Learn how other NGOs have made the decision on what/how to adapt
